On November 21, 2002 The Lapeer County Education and Technology Center and The Lapeer County Career Preparation Coordinators hosted a Health Science Forum. This Forum brought together twelve different types of health service careers and students from all of the Lapeer County high schools.
The many different health service careers that were seen including, Cheryl Kousino, Physical Therapist at Lapeer Regional Hospital; Pat Getz, Occupational Therapist from Lapeer Regional Hospital; Scott Stewart and Julie Miller, Therapists from EThe Health Enrichment Center; Cari Ferkowicz, X-ray Technician from Marlette Community Hospital; Joan Jensen, Lab Technician from Marlette Community Hospital; Howard Touchette, Bio-Med Technician at Lapeer Regional Hospital; Lori Jacobs and Paul Hyssong, RN, EMT-P CEN Flight Nurse for Critical Care Transport at the University of Michigan Health Systems of Ann Arbor; Candy Weston, Lapeer County Educational and Technical Center Home Care Nurse and Educator; Dotty Korth, RN for Marlette Community Hospital; Joe Felton, Pharmacist; Dan Wnuk, Pharmaceutical Rep; and John Dorland, Pharmacy Tech for Lapeer Regional Hospital. Presenters were put into 4 different groups; Therapy Radiology/Technical; Nursing; Non-Traditional.
Students were allowed to sign-up to see two of the classifications. Lunch was served to everyone at the Forum. The luncheon was prepared and served by the Culinary Arts class. After lunch, all of the speakers were seated at the front of the conference room and all students were allowed to ask questions. This gave the students an opportunity to hear from the other classifications that they did not attend.
Present were nearly 100 students from the various high schools. North Branch High School had 23 students in attendance. All students who have shown interest in the Health Services Career Pathway were invited to this event.
This is the second Forum that has been hosted by the Coordinators at the Ed-Tech Center. In 2001/2002 school year, a Law Enforcement Forum was held and was a great success. The Health Sciences Forum is the second in what we hope is a long series of career related county events.
